NYC firefighters union members say some BX firehouses in dire need of repair
(02/08/04) UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - Members of the city's firefighters union say some Bronx firehouses are in serious need of repair.
Engine 43 in the University Heights section of the Bronx is one of more than 200 city firehouses that need repair work. The fire company turns 100 years old this spring, and fire officials have a long list of problems with some firehouses. Scaffolding has been up at the Engine 43 station, but it is not for repairs on the building. It is to keep bricks from falling onto passersby. The firehouse is also dealing with rat and roach infestation, a broken boiler and a rickety sliding pole.
At least one other Bronx fire station, Engine 41 on 150th Street, has also had similar problems. FDNY officials say repairs are being made on firehouses around the city all the time. Budgets for firehouse repairs have actually increased within the last four years.
