Two Bronx firehouses getting a fifth member added back

Two Bronx firehouses are among fifteen others citywide that will get a fifth member added back to their engines.

This Saturday, Engine 43 in Morris Heights and Engine 71 in Melrose will get the one extra firefighter restored.

This is part of an agreement from last spring between the Uniformed Firefighters Association and the city. If specific reductions were made in medical leaves, the city agreed to restore staffing to firehouses.

Last year, a fifth firefighter was restored to five of the city's engine companies, bringing the number of five-member engines from 40 to 45. The new restorations will bring the number to 60.

The majority of the city's 197 engines are operated by four-member teams.
