Bronx livery cab drivers will cut back overnight hours starting Sunday

(02/14/04) HUNTS POINT - Starting Sunday, it might be more difficult for Bronx residents to find a livery cab. Officials from the New York State's Taxi Driver Federation are decreasing the number of livery cab drivers in the Bronx and the rest of New York City.

A livery cab driver was attacked in the Bronx on Tuesday. Two other drivers were also attacked in the last week. Now, the federation leaders want the police to make it mandatory that all livery cabs have global positioning tracking system devices in case of emergencies. Taxi federation officials say the driver decrease is aimed at sending passengers a message not to abuse drivers.

Taxi leaders say there will less cab drivers in the Bronx between the hours of midnight to 6 a.m. for at least 30 days. Federation members are also working to developing a safety-training program for drivers.
