Police say Bronx teen dies after being accidentally shot

(02/15/04) BAYCHESTER - Cops say 17-year-old Nathaniel Vallejo was accidentally shot early Saturday morning. He later died inside a friend's apartment on Bouke Avenue in Baychester, according to police.

Now, Vallejo's mother Rikelma Betansay is speaking out. She says weak gun control laws and lyrics in certain music contributed to her son's death. Betansay says new laws are needed immediately to protect children. Next Saturday, Vallejo would have turned 18.

So far, no arrests have been made. Police say the investigation into how Vallejo died will continue.

The latest statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention state that there were 21 accidental gun deaths in New York in 2001.
