Bronx man thankful to be alive after his bathroom floor collapses

A Bronx man says he's lucky to be alive after his bathroom floor caves in.

Steve Ortiz is thankful Monday after escaping injury Sunday. Ortiz, who lives in an apartment at 1064 Carroll Place, says he was standing in his bathroom when the floor began to give way. He was able to make it out before everything in the bathroom went crashing into the basement of the apartment building.

Both the fire department and officials from the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development showed up at the scene. After an investigation, officials deemed the entire apartment unsafe.

The Ortiz family is now staying with relatives while the building's management company, Carroll Place Associates, works on fixing the apartment. The company has promised to give the family a vacant apartment in the building to stay at while the repairs are made to their home.
