Taft H.S. tops schools chancellor's list for poor attendance record

Officials found that BX schools are failing when it comes to attendance.

According to the Department of Education, Bronx high school students have the worst reputation for skipping class in the city. At the top of Schools Chancellor Joel Klein's list is Taft High School. The list shows that about 40 percent of kids at Taft are still not making it to class. Roosevelt High School also made it onto the chancellor's list.

Some students and parents say more needs to be done to keep kids in class. They say there needs to be more programs to help students. One student who skipped school because he felt it was boring failed to graduate on time. He says if he could do it over again he would not have skipped school.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education says the city does have programs in place to help improve attendance in schools.
