Skunk invasion in Co-op City leaves residents crying foul

Residents in Co-op City say skunks are invading their neighborhood and leaving behind quite an odor.

Residents say the black and white animals have had a few run-ins with cars in the Co-op City area. Now those living near the road kill say the smell has outlasted the skunk's life. People living near Co-op City Boulevard say they see skunks running around the area day and night.

A spokesperson for the parks department say it's normal for skunks to live in the open parkland. With that in mind, residents believe the skunks are coming from Pelham Bay Park, which is just east of Co-op City, to get into their garbage dumpsters.

Co-op City management says recent construction in the area may have forced the skunks into the residential area. They say traps have been set and they are working to put metal plates under landscaped areas to prevent skunks from digging holes.
