Police say hit-and-run driver in Tremont sends little girl, grandmother to hospital

(02/28/04) TREMONT - An alleged hit-and-run driver sends a little girl and her grandmother to the hospital. Police say the two were struck while watching a train traveling on a nearby overpass near Park Avenue and 183rd Street.

Police say the driver somehow ran his car up onto the sidewalk and then tried to flee the scene. Witnesses say Bronx residents chased him down and held him until police arrived. The driver's family members say it was an accident, and he ran away because he was scared.

The conditions of the little girl and her grandmother are not known. Hospital officials are currently not releasing any information.
