Cops end hostage standoff in Morrisania after seven hours of negotiations
(03/13/04) MORRISANIA - Bronx police ended a hostage standoff after seven hours of negotiations on Saturday. Officers were at the scene at 730 East 166th Street in Morrisania since 9:30 a.m.
Cops arrested 32-year-old Adam Perry after they were called to reports of a dispute between a Perry and his father over a gun. Police say they were told the son had a history of mental illness and was inside his 85-year-old grandmother's third-story apartment holding her hostage with three guns. When police approached, they say Perry began firing at least 100 rounds through the door. Officers tell News 12 The Bronx they did not fire back, and Perry threw his firearms out the apartment window as they negotiated his surrender. They later subdued him with a non-lethal tazer gun.
There are no reports of injuries to Perry or family members. Friends say this is not the suspect's typical behavior. They say he snapped because he lost his brother, his grandmother is sick, and he recently lost his job. Police say Perry was arrested nine times previously.
