Business Improvement District distinction helped bring change to Norwood
No lights, dirty sidewalks and no pay phones is what the shopping area where Gunhill Road meets Jerome Avenue was known for. But in the late 90's when business owners decided to become a Business Improvement District that all changed.
The Jerome Gunhill BID is one of four BID's in the Bronx. Business owners who take part in a BID are taxed a little more, but that money goes towards improvements and added services. Robert Garcia, BID director, says supplemental services, sanitation, security and promotions for the business community are all part of belonging to a BID.
Supporters say making an area into a BID can help a neighborhood grow. They say more businesses start to move in and property values begin to rise.
Come the summer, business owners in Norwood will have to vote once again whether to renew their BID status. Meantime, Fordham Road and 161st Street are two areas slated to become BIDS.
