Hunts Point residents say neighborhood businesses are disappearing
Tough competition may be taking its toll on small businesses in one Bronx community. At least seven stores have closed recently at the Southern Boulevard Shopping District near Westchester Avenue. Most neighboring merchants agree that competition is stiff; many stores sell similar goods, forcing owners to lower their prices to attract customers. Franchise stores are replacing many of the empty stores. Some residents feel the competition is hurting 'mom and pop' stores that have been part of the community for decades, others support the big stores if they offer lower prices.
