Twenty-inch water main breaks on Prospect Avenue in East Tremont

A water main break is affecting Bronx residents in the area of Fairmount Place and Prospect Avenue in East Tremont.

A hole formed on Prospect Avenue between 176th Street and Fairmount Avenue following a 20-inch water main break around 5 p.m. Thursday. The water flooded the basement of a nearby building, which nearly covered the boiler. Firefighters were called to pump the water out. The pastor's office and food pantry of an area church was also damaged.

Con Ed workers were called to make sure electrical equipment was not damaged. Water ran down the overpass structure over the Cross Bronx Expressway, but traffic was not affected.

Officials will be working around the clock to repair the damage. According to emergency crews, no injuries were reported and no residents had to be evacuated.

The street will be closed until the water main is repaired.
