Sen. Chuck Schumer introduces $463 million federal bill to fight gang violence

(03/21/04) NEW YORK - Recent NYPD reports show that violent crime in The Bronx and around New York City is down from previous years. But according to Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), gang violence is on the rise.

Senator Schumer's proposed Criminal Street Gang Abatement Act would toughen penalties for convicted gang members. It would also increase the power of authorities to prosecute offenders.

A total of $463 million in funding would go towards new prosecutors and witness protection programs. The act also calls for an increase in funding for youth programs in The Bronx.
