Union representing BX and city teachers declares impasse in contract talks

Teachers' union officials says contract talks with the city are deadlocked after both sides met Thursday night. The United Federation of Teachers, the union representing Bronx and city teachers, has now declared and impasse and is calling for an investigation by the New York State Employment Relations Board, which is the agency that provides mediation and arbitration for labor disputes.

If the agency agrees there is an impasse, then a labor mediator will investigate the issues and make recommendations. The recommendations would then serve as guidelines for continued talks with the city. Some of the issues holding up the negotiations between the UFT and city are class sizes in Bronx and city schools, and teachers' salaries.

The teachers have been working without a contract since last May.
