Weekly recycling program resumes in the Bronx and city

Weekly recycling returns to the Bronx and city following a two-year hiatus. Starting Thursday, residents will have to start recycling glass items. Recycling for plastic and other items resumed last year and was being collected every two weeks. But now all items will be collected every week.

Sanitation officials say plastic, glass and metal items should be thrown out in either clear garbage bags or placed in a blue bin. All other items such as newspapers and cardboard should be either thrown out in a clear garbage bag or placed in a green bin.

Bronx residents say it's about time the program was reinstated because it's needed to clean things up. Mayor Bloomberg had done away with the recycling program in order to save the city more than $40 million.

Residents will have a 60-day grace period before they have to comply with the recycling program. After 60 days, those not recycling will be fined $25.
