Runners brave rain, wind and cold for 10k Urban Environmental Challenge race
(04/04/04) VAN CORTLANDT STATE PARK - On a dreary, cold, cloudy and rainy Sunday morning, more than 100 athletes took part in the 6th annual 10k Urban Environmental Challenge.
Members of the Van Cortlandt Track Club sponsor the event, which was held in the back woods of Van Cortlandt State Park. Many runners believe it is the toughest 10k race in the city. Besides running 6.3 miles, the participants had to deal with rocks, hills, trees, twigs, and streams as part of the only trail race in New York City.
Chris Malynowski was the fastest one to the finish line, winning the race in 35 minutes and 52 seconds. The women's winner was Una Broderick, coming in 12th overall, in 42 minutes and 40 seconds.
