Man killed after being hit by SUV on University Ave.; driver charged with DWI
The morning rush was just getting underway Tuesday when police say an SUV struck a 64-year-old man crossing University Avenue. The man was taken to North Central Bronx Hospital where he died a little more than an hour after the accident.
The driver of the SUV, Christopher Murray of the Bronx, was charged with DWI. Police say Murray may also face vehicular manslaughter charges.
Residents in the area say they are not surprised by what happened. They say wide roads such as University Avenue act as raceways and pedestrians often don't want to wait for the lights to change. A crossing guard who is stationed on University Avenue feels cameras should be installed to catch aggressive drivers.
