Easter celebration delayed at Walton High School after miscommunication
(04/11/04) KINGSBRIDGE HEIGHTS - Hundreds of Bronx Christians celebrating Easter were almost unable to worship at Walton High School in Kingsbridge Heights despite previous arrangements.
Members of the Fordham Manor Reform Church did attend Easter services at Walton High School on Sunday, but Pastor Irving Rivera says the school's custodian originally did not let the congregation into the building. The pastor says he had the proper permit. He believes school workers should have had a copy of it, but they did not. Pastor Rivera called The Bronx borough president's office, and the cogeneration was let into the building after a few hours.
The Bronx pastor says he has been holding Easter Sunday services for years at the high school because his church cannot accommodate the large turnout for the holiday.
On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate one of holiest holidays of the year, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. The Pope delivered his Easter message Sunday at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. He urged world leaders to settle conflicts in Iraq, the Middle East and Africa.
