Montefiore Medical Center helps educate people about organ and tissue donation

As part of National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness month, Montefiore Medical Center and the New York Organ Donor Network educated Bronx residents about the importance of organ and tissue donation.

Presentations by organ recipients and doctors as well as interactive exhibits were given on Wednesday. Dr. Vivan Tellis, Director of Transplantation at Montefiore, says that just one organ or tissue donor can help save nine people's lives.

Montefiore has one of the most active transplant programs in the city, with a success rate of between 80 to 95 percent. Their patients ranged in age from 13 months to over 70 years old. Officials say that more than 80,000 people nationwide are still waiting for an organ transplant, with 10 percent of those people in New York.

According to doctors, surgery is usually covered by insurance. Recently, a bill was passed in Congress to help cover a donor's leave from work during and after surgery.
