FDNY crew being hailed heroes in Edenwald after saving a family of three

Firefighters battling a blaze on Dereimer Avenue Thursday morning are being hailed heroes by neighbors of the three family members rescued from their home.

All that's left of the home at 36 Dereimer Avenue is a shell. When firefighters arrived on the scene, a passerby had already helped rescue one of the family members inside the home. The fire and smoke was too thick for William Roman to go back in and save the rest of his family, but he was able to tell firefighters exactly where his family was in the house. That helped firefighters save Susan Jackson, who is disabled, and her son and grandson.

The three were rushed to Jacobi Medical Center where they are listed in serious condition.

Right now, fire officials say it looks like the fire started in the front of the home and quickly spread to the back.
