Early morning fire in a Soundview apartment leaves one person dead

An early morning fire Saturday at 1145 Morrison Avenue has left one person dead. Fire Chief Howard Hill says the fire, which broke out around 6 a.m., was contained in one three-room apartment on the fourth floor and it did not spread to the floor above.

Officials say Delia Vasquez, 23, was rescued from the building but died later at the hospital. A 9-year-old girl broke her leg after falling from the fire escape. One toddler and one adult are being treated for injuries.

Neighbors say that a man living in an adjacent building helped get residents out of the building. All of the residents, except for the family who lost their home to the fire, were able to return back to their apartments.

Fire marshals say there was no smoke detector in the apartment and are investigating the cause of the fire.
