BX third-graders set to take standardized English exam under new policy

Thousands of third-graders throughout the Bronx and city are preparing to take the state standardized English exam Tuesday. The difference this year is that for the first time the test will way heavily on whether or not students advance to the next grade.

Under Mayor Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein's new controversial policy to end social promotion, students who fail standardized tests in math and English will be held back. Klein spoke about the policy Monday in the Bronx and how important it is to end social promotion.

Students are scheduled to take the standardized math test on Tuesday, April 27.
