Thousands of BX third-graders take the standardized English exam
Thousands of third-graders throughout the Bronx and city are taking the state standardized English exam Tuesday. The difference this year is that for the first time the test will weigh heavily on whether or not students advance to the next grade.
Under Mayor Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein's new controversial policy to end social promotion, students who fail standardized tests in math and English will be held back.
While some parents feel it's a good idea for kids not to be promoted to fourth grade if they are not ready, others don't see it that way. Hundreds of parents protested the test and even kept their kids home from school instead of putting them through the pressure of passing.
Students are scheduled to take the standardized math test on Tuesday, April 27. The tests can be re-taken in summer school.
