New school slated to open in Riverdale has parents up in arms
The Riverdale community is up in arms over a new school that is slated to open its doors in the fall. Residents claim they were never told about the plan so they took their fight to the steps of the Tweed Courthouse Friday.
The Fun Math School, which will host grades 6 through 12, will be open to students around the city come September. But elected officials in the Bronx say no one ever consulted residents of the Riverdale community, who had other plans for the site.
Randi Martos, parent association president, says the hope was to have the space used for early childhood education. She says that's what residents will continue to fight for.
Bronx officials also feel that the new school should be used to alleviate overcrowding in District 10 instead of being used it to bring in students from all around the city.
The Department of Education will meet with officials from Riverdale next week.
