MTA to officially take over Bronx to Manhattan private express bus service

(04/24/04) THROGS NECK - New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) officials recently announced they will take over private express bus service to Manhattan through the Bronx. The MTA will take over Liberty Bus Line and New York Bus service.

City officials say current service of the private companies was not meeting certain standards. Months ago, city officials re-signed a temporary contract with the MTA leaders. The private bus companies' contracts expire June 30, and that is when MTA workers will officially begin operating the buses.

For now, the fare will remain $4 each way for express bus service. Transit service fares will increase to MTA rates of $2. Bronx residents in parts of the North Bronx could see the changes by this summer.
