SHARE New York food program apparently shuts down without notice

(04/25/04) MORRIS PARK - Officials from SHARE New York (Self Help And Resource Exchange New York) have apparently shut down their operation without notice. The privately funded non-profit program, which provides food to hundreds of low-to-middle income families and organizations around the city, has become a reliable food source for many Bronx families and dozens of Bronx organizations.

People volunteer for SHARE New York to pay for food at almost 60 percent less than what they would pay at a regular grocery store. Food pick-ups are scheduled once a month at the end of every month. But when folks showed up this weekend, the food warehouse was closed without officials giving any prior notification.

Bronx residents who get their food from the SHARE program do not know what has happened to their money or their food. Calls by News 12 The Bronx to the program director of SHARE were not returned
