Residents in Mott Haven protest plan to bring methadone clinic to the area

Residents in Mott Haven protested Tuesday hoping to stop a methadone clinic from opening in their area.

The Albert Einstein College of Medicine wants to move three of its existing methadone clinics from 149th Street into one clinic at 138th Street in Mott Haven. But residents say the clinic is too close to their homes and schools and add that they already have to deal with two homeless shelters in the area.

Protesters also claim they were never told about the plan. According to a spokesperson for the clinics, the move is needed and says that local community board members and elected officials were involved in the plan.

So far, zoning laws have kept the plan in limbo, but the city is expected to make a decision on the matter next week. Meantime, residents say the plan is a classic case of dumping on the south Bronx.
