Senator Guy Velella reportedly to plead guilty to bribery charges

State Senator Guy Velella (R-Bronx) is reportedly planning to plead guilty to one felony bribery charge and accept a year in jail.

The plea is reportedly in exchange for charges being dropped against his father Vincent. Both are charged with taking more than $100,000 in kickbacks for the awarding of state contracts and housing subsidies.

A guilty plea would also put an end to Velella's 32-year political career. If Velella resigns from the state Senate prior to entering his guilty plea, he will protect his state pension due to him for his years of service in the state Legislature. Velella also serves as the chairman of the state Senate Republican Campaign Committee and is Bronx GOP chairman.

Senator Velella's spokesperson declined to comment on the possible plea deal.
