Some City Council members call for make up English exam to be thrown out
Criticism of the citywide standardized English exam, which third-graders must pass to go onto the next grade, is now coming from some City Council members.
Council members who sit on the education committee are calling for Tuesday's make up exam to be thrown out after students were confused when the alphabetical, multiple choice answer sheets didn't match the test questions. The reason for the make up exam was due to some 1,300 students using last year's exam to study for this year's test, which had some of the same questions.
Although Mayor Bloomberg is taking responsibility for the errors, he said in his weekly radio show that only the kids who failed the make up exam will have to take it again.
Education officials have also implemented an automatic appeals process for third-graders who fail the test. Students who fail can retake the test in summer school.
