Woman accidentally shot in the leg during armed jewelry store heist in Fordham

A woman was hit in the leg by a stray bullet during an armed jewelry heist Wednesday.

Police say five armed men robbed Big Jake Jewelers on East Fordham Road in the middle of the afternoon. Police say the suspects made off with jewels and then took off down the street. According to police, some of the suspects were able to get away on foot while the others got away in a car.

During the robbery, a store security guard shot at the men and ended up striking an 18-year-old shopper. The teen was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Meanwhile, store owners in Fordham say they are not surprised by the robbery claiming there are two to three a week. They say more of a police presence is needed.
