Some Bronx residents crying foul over plans to build a hockey rink at Loreto Park

Loreto Park is a place where kids and adults like to spend time playing sports such as handball and basketball. But some residents feel that will change once construction on a roller hockey rink begins.

For Camille Mauro, who has lived in Morris Park for 45 years, the idea of taking away the park and making it into just a hockey rink does not sit well with her. Some residents say they may even start going to another park.

But according to the commissioner of the City Parks Department, half of the space at the park will be available for open play and concerts while the rink will make up the other half. The new rink will also be enclosed behind a fence.

The million-dollar project, which was approved by the City Council and Parks Department, is expected to start this summer and last for about six months. During that time a portion of Loreto Park will be closed. The goal of the project is to create a new sporting area and better park for all residents.
