Bronx's Orchard Beach opens, but the water is off limits

Bronx's only beach is officially open for the Memorial Day weekend, but swimmers will have to be patient.

An advisory from the department of health states that high bacteria levels in the beach's waters could make people sick. Signs are posted near the ocean, and lifeguards are on duty to make sure nobody tries to venture into the sea. Many people still made it out to the beach Saturday to enjoy the weather, despite the advisory.

According to the Bronx parks commissioner, approximately 60,000 people visit Orchard Beach every day of the summer. In addition to the sun and surf, Bronx residents can enjoy canoeing, kayaking, hiking and a Latin summer music series in the upcoming weeks.
