Bronx fire officials give residents safe grilling tips for holiday weekend
(05/30/04) PELHAM BAY PARK - Fire department officials in the Bronx warn residents that an outdoor barbecue on Memorial Day weekend or any time during the summer can turn into a disaster if it is not done properly.
Fire officials say calls for fires and injuries at barbecues go up during the summer months. They say some of the biggest problems involve improper use of propane grills. They add other problems arise if city dwellers cook on rooftops, decks or fire escapes.
Fire department officials also say that people are often too nervous to call them if they have problems, but officials warn that small fires can turn in to big ones. If a fire ever threatens personal safety or property, they say folks should call 9-1-1.
