New York Emperors win back-to-back stickball championships
(05/31/04) SOUNDVIEW - The 20th Annual New York Emperors Memorial Stickball Classic held its championship on Memorial Day. The title game saw the Emperors and Gun Hill, two Bronx teams, going head to head.
The game was played at Stickball Boulevard in Soundview. Gun Hill took the lead in the fourth, but Wayne Lippold, from the Emperors, tied the score. In the sixth, Lippold scored the winning home run. The final score 2-1.
The year's tournament bringing out 13 teams from the Bronx, the rest of the City, New Jersey, Florida, California and Puerto Rico. The Bronx is known as the birthplace of stickball.
