Bronx tenant associations discuss ways to keep affordable housing in the borough

(06/05/04) HARDING PARK - Bronx tenant associations gathered together Saturday to come up with ways to keep affordable housing in the Bronx.

Some Bronx tenants; primarily immigrants, seniors and the disabled; could be forced to pay much more for rent if landlords buy out of an affordable housing program called Mitchell-Lama. The tenants are also worried because another low-income program is also at risk. Section 8 pays a portion of eligible tenants' rent. Tenant groups say many Bronx landlords are not re-signing Section 8 contracts.

The city has stopped processing many section 8 applications. For Bronx residents on the city's list, the wait for an application could be up to 10 years.
