New charter schools slated for the Bronx supported by the Schools Chancellor

The Schools Chancellor announced Wednesday that he supports the opening of new charter schools in the Bronx and city.

The Department of Education along with Schools Chancellor Joel Klein sees the new charter schools as part of building a new foundation for education. Eight charter schools citywide are slated to open in September citywide, three of which will be in the Bronx.

Charter schools are run independently from the Department of Education and are funded through a combination of private donations and city money. The schools have the freedom to form curriculums, class schedules and teaching methods but still must meet state standards.

Students are chosen via a lottery system for the schools. For more information on charter schools call (212) 374-5402.
