Apartment fire in Eastchester Gardens claims the lives of two young brothers

(06/12/04) EASTCHESTER GARDENS - An apartment fire claimed the lives of two young Bronx brothers. It happened Saturday just after 2 a.m. in the Eastchester Gardens housing complex at 1216 Burke Avenue.

The boys were ages 12 and 5. A family member tells News 12 The Bronx they lived with their mother and grandfather, who were both taken to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment. Seven firefighters were also taken to Jacobi for minor injuries.

Neighbors say it appears that the fire started in a bedroom and gutted the second floor apartment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire marshals say an overloaded extension cord may be to blame.
