Bronx students may have to spend more time in the classroom come the fall

Students in Bronx and city elementary and middle schools may have to spend more time in the classroom come the fall if the Department of Education has its way.

Education officials plan to extend the public school day by 10 minutes to help create a better balance for teachers to have enough time for training, planning and teaching. This is the third year in a row the city has changed the school day schedule, but last year teachers and parents were not happy.

Under the new plan teachers would work an extra 100 minutes a week, giving them more time for job training. Department of Education officials and teachers believe the plan will help everyone.

The teachers' union must first approve the plan before the change can be made.
