Dads have some fun at 16th annual Nelson Avenue Father's Day Extravaganza
(06/20/04) HIGHBRIDGE - Bronx residents in Highbridge celebrated Father's Day with an extravaganza involving the whole community. The 16th annual Nelson Avenue Father's Day Extravaganza was all about fun and games. It was an event where Bronx dads had their turn at some fun.
Many fathers also reflected on what they say matters most to them -- being a dad. They say fatherhood is not just about supporting their families, but also about supporting an entire community.
Since the first event in 1988, organizer Philip "Dom" Arnold says there has been a growth of other community events and activities for dads and their children.
Out of the Father's Day Extravaganza has sprung a summer basketball tournament for kids in Highbridge. It runs June 27 through the beginning of September. For more information on the tournament, contact Barbara Kerry of the Committee for Equality and Enriched Quality of Life at (718) 538-6050 or e-mail partners of the event, Highbridge Life Community Center, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
