Former state Senator Guy Velella sentenced to one year in jail

Former Senator Guy Velella was sentenced Monday to one year behind bars after pleading guilty in a bribery probe.

Velella, who served the Bronx as well as parts of Westchester County, pleaded guilty in May as part of a deal to get charges against his father dropped. Also as part of the deal, Velella pleaded guilty to fourth-degree conspiracy for taking money in exhange for using his influence for state contract awards and was forced to give up his law license.

Before learning his sentence Velella apologized for what he did.

Since Velella resigned from the state Senate prior to entering his guilty plea, he protected his state pension due to him for his years of service in the state Legislature.

Velella will serve his one-year sentence at Rikers Island.
