Bronx man charged with fatally shooting his girlfriend and her visiting sister
A Bronx man has been charged with the shooting death of his girlfriend and her visiting sister.
Authorities say 30-year-old Edelmiro Cesareo shot and killed 32-year-old Loreen Merchan and her sister, Yasmin Merchan, on June 8. According to police, the shooting occurred after Cesareo and Loreen Merchan began arguing over Yasmin Merchan's extended visits to the couple's Throgs Neck apartment. Prosecutors say Loreen Merchan's two daughters from a previous relationship were present at the time of the shooting.
Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson says Cesareo fled to Puerto Rico soon after the shootings. According to the district attorney, Cesareo was later arrested in the city of Arroyo and flown back to New York last week.
A grand jury indicted Cesareo on charges including first and second-degree murder, manslaughter, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. He is scheduled to be arraigned July 13 in state Supreme Court. District Attorney Johnson has 120 days to file notice of whether he intends to seek the death penalty in the case.
