Bronx stores required to sell self-extinguishing cigarettes under new law
Bronx stores, as well as all stores in New York State, are now required by law to stock and sell new "fire-safe" cigarettes to customers. The product is designed to help significantly decrease the number of fires caused by lighted cigarettes.
Under the new law, which took effect Monday, cigarettes must have a special paper that stops burning when a smoker takes a break from inhaling. One Bronx fire chief says he's optimistic that the chance of a fire starting while a smoker falls asleep before they finish will be reduced.
Stores in the Bronx that still have the old cigarette packs in stock are allowed to sell those, even though the law is now in effect.
