Pelham Bay property for sale has some officials worried about how it will be used

(07/03/04) PELHAM BAY - The Smithsonian Institution Storage Facility in Pelham Bay closed its doors last month. The property is expected to go on sale in the near future, but some Bronx community leaders are concerned about how the property will be used.

Community Board 10 says the lot would not be developed until after the Throgs Neck, Waterbury-Lasalle rezoning proposal goes into effect. The city is expected to approve the rezoning plan no later than January of 2005. That plan also regulates how developers build on the property, meaning attached large multi-family homes or apartment buildings cannot be built.

The city's school construction authority may be considering building a high school on the Bronx property, but Community Board 10 opposes such a plan.
