Summer school begins for thousands of Bronx and city kids

Summer school got underway for thousands of Bronx and city kids Tuesday. One group that will be hitting the books this summer is third-graders who failed the citywide math and English exams.

As parents dropped their kids off, many are unhappy with the city's plan to end so-called social promotion. The end of social promotion means kids who do not pass the standardized math and English exams will have to repeat the third-grade. One parent says she didn't feel the kids were prepared for the tests.

Out of the more than 10,000 third-graders who failed the exams, about 1,000 filed an appeal with the Board of Education and were promoted to the fourth-grade based on good classroom marks.

The standardized math and English exams will be offered again from August 9-11 to give students another chance at making it to the fourth-grade.
