Soundview residents outraged at plans to turn industrial complex into high school

People residing in the Soundview section of the Bronx are upset at the Department of Education's plans to transform a former aviation electronic manufacturing plant into a new high school.

The city has been at odds with the people of Soundview for months on this issue, because the city believes the site poses no threat to the health and safety of the more than 1,000 students that will attend the school.

The site was also the location of a West Nile virus pesticide plant, which worries members of Community Board 9 of any lingering contaminants. City education officials have informed the community board that the site has been tested for any remaining toxins, but the board is not convinced.

Community Board 9 is looking for a second opinion from an independent contractor to run tests on the site for any remaining substances.
