Fire department begins investigating into an accident that killed a man in Longwood

The fire department has begun an investigation into a fatal accident that killed a 26-year-old man and injured several firefighters early Saturday morning in Longwood. Investigators have found that blood alcohol tests taken from both drivers involved in the incident have come back negative. Ronaldy Mendez was one of six passengers in the SUV that collided with a fire truck responding to a nearby call. Mendez was killed and several firefighters were injured from the crash that occurred at the intersection of East 163rd Street and Intervale Avenue. A memorial has been set up for Mendez at the intersection. The Mendez family has retained a lawyer to see if anyone should be held responsible for the accident. At this point, the family is hesitant to blame the fire department for the accident.Funeral services are being held for Mendez Tuesday.
