Autistic man dies while swimming in the Castle Hill YMCA pool

An autistic man was found unconscious in the Castle Hill YMCA pool Tuesday. He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police say Steven Stabola, 42, was at the YMCA for an outing with the Joseph DeClemente Group Home in Riverdale. The group goes to the YMCA twice a week for two hours. YMCA officials say the first hour there is an instructional swim and the second hour there is a free swim. A spokeswoman for the YCMA says during the free swim Stabola became unconscious and they called police.

The cause of Stabola's death is still under investigation. The YMCA spokeswoman says there were two trained, professional lifeguards on duty at the time of Stabola's death. She says the YMCA will be working with officials with the investigation.
