Search underway for 15-year-old who escaped juvenile center in Mott Haven

A search is underway for a 15-year-old who managed to escape from the Horizon Juvenile Detention Center Monday morning.

Detention center officials noticed the boy was missing during role call and now the center is in lockdown. Department of Juvenile Justice officials say the only time inmates leave is with a police escort.

Some residents are concerned that someone could escape from the secure facility. The center is located less then a block away from a school, which is why many residents didn't want the center in the area in the first place.

The teen was being held at the center awaiting trial on burglary charges. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-8477.
