MTA officials looking for ways to close multi-million dollar budget deficit

(07/25/04) PARKCHESTER - Subway and bus service may be reduced and Bronx straphangers could soon find themselves paying more based on the new Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) budget.

MTA officials tell News 12 The Bronx they are reviewing various ways to close a multi-million dollar deficit. One possibility is raising the price of unlimited monthly or weekly MetroCards. But transportation officials have said they do not have plans to raise the $2 fare, which went up in May 2003. Some commuters say the city needs to do more to fix transportation problems rather than shortchange riders.

The MTA is expected to release its budget for next year on Thursday. Then, it would be finalized in December.
