Residents say assault on priest is proof of safety problems in the Hub

Residents living and working in the Hub say an attack on a priest in the area is proof that there is a growing safety problem in the neighborhood.

A man witnesses say was threatening people outside the Immaculate Conception Church Saturday struck Reverend Francis Gargani in the back with an object. Rosario Rosado, the parish secretary, says father Gargani was trying to help the people and get the man to calm down. Rosado says the neighborhood is becoming unsafe.

Police later arrested Bristol Edwards, whom they believe also attacked a 29-year-old passerby. He is charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

Reverend Gargani, who is a longtime priest and missionary at the church, was not seriously injured and has since left for a mission. He is not expected back for a few weeks.
